You might recognize Freddy from his Netflix show Free Rein or from Shadow and Bone, where he plays the dark and cunning Kaz Brekker. As a huge fan of Six of Crows, i was all over the moon to see Freddy portray Kaz in such a perfect way on the show that i couldn’t help myself in creating this space to keep up with his career. I’d like to thank my friends Emily and Sara for the help in getting some of Freddy’s projects and photos. 28-year-old Freddy Carter is the magnetic star of Netflix’s Shadow & Bone. Your new favorite show if you’ve seen it, and your new favorite show if you haven’t. It’s a mind-f#ck of a series bottled up in sci-fi of the highest fandom order. He stars as the daring Kaz Brekker, the “bastard of the barrel”— a lovable devil with a streak of constant bravado. Following the news of a second season, the English actor, one of Netflix’s latest prized possessions answers some particular curious questions.

AMERICAN STUDIES: It’s been written that you moved around quite a lot as a child. Which place is the most memorable?

FREDDY CARTER: I have very happy memories from Virginia in the USA. We were only there for a short time but there was a Chuck E’ Cheese so I was in 6 year old heaven.

AMERICAN STUDIES: The school you attended in Taunton, Queen’s College…on paper, seems like something out of a film. Magical, grand and very British. What was that like?

CARTER: It wasn’t quite Hogwarts but the building was originally a monastery. Which mostly meant it was absolutely freezing in the winter.

AMERICAN STUDIES: Can you name a random and obscure memory that comes to mind right now?

CARTER: The pressure! I remember a birthday party of my Mum’s when I was very little; she had a cake shaped like a duck.

Frederick James Carter (born January 27, 1993) is a British actor and director. He was born in Plymouth, Devon and grew up predominantly in Somerset. As his father was in the military, he spent some of his childhood moving around. His older brother is actor Tom Austen, he also has a middle brother. The three brothers went to school at Queen’s College in Taunton. After graduation, Freddy enrolled at the Oxford School of Drama, graduating in 2015.

Following his graduation, Freddy featured in the company of the Rose Theatre Kingston production of The War of the Roses, directed by Trevor Nunn. His onscreen debut was as a soldier in the 2017 DC Comic film, Wonder Woman. Shortly after, Freddy landed his first major role as a main character Peter “Pin” Hawthorne in the Netflix series Free Rein. In 2018, he starred as Alexander Flint in the stage production of Harley Granville-Barker’s Agnes Colander, and played Ellis in the horror film The Convent.

In 2019, Carter wrote and directed his first short film, No. 89. He also had a main role as Tom in the mini series 15 Days, and a recurring role as Jason Ripper in the DC Comics series Pennyworth. It would be later in the year that the news would come out that he would star as Kaz Brekker on Netflix’s series Shadow and Bone.

Shortly after Shadow and Bone was released in 2021, Freddy revealed that he would be appearing on Apple +’s series Masters of the Air. He’d also be directing his second movie, Broken Gargoyles.
